Kindergarten had a GREAT first week of music classes this school year. Our first lesson was all about using Singing Voices, Steady Beat, Building, Learning Names. Students sang "Sally Is A Builder" which is based on the melody for "Johnny Works With One Hammer." The words are as follows:
Sally is a builder,
Builder, builder.
Sally is a builder,
All day long.
What will she build?
What will she build?
Sally is a builder,
All day long.
Students got to sing the song in a circle, and use Rhythm sticks to keep the beat in interesting ways (Tap like a hammer, Rub like a Saw, Twist like a Screwdriver, etc.). Then we changed the name "Sally" to match the names of the students within each class to give them some special recognition, as well as help everyone learn names. When we sang about a student, that students went to the middle of a circle and build a structure using some toy blocks while the rest of the class sang and played. At the end, the student tells everyone what they built, and the next student gets to be the new builder.
This lesson was so much fun, I completely forgot to take pictures of all the interesting structures the students built. I will say that Skate parks, Castles, Towers and "Grandma's House" were a personal favorite of this group.
